  5. valve returns some
  6. of the exhaust gas
  7. to the cylinders. 
  8. This is done to
  9. lower the
  10. combustion
  11. temperature. 
  12.  
  13. Lowering the
  14. combustion
  15. temperature reduces
  16. the amount of
  17. nitrous oxide
  18. produced.  Nitrous
  19. oxide combines with
  20. hydrocarbons in the
  21. atmosphere to form
  22. smog.  This in turn
  23. reduces the amount
  24. of smog and
  25. pollution that we
  26. breathe.
